How to make an appointment
If you would like to make an appointment to discuss your situation with one of our counsellors you can contact us directly. You do not need to get a letter of referral from your doctor. Simply click on your geographical area and you will find the freephone number to use. Your call will usually be answered by one of our Administrators. S/he will take your contact details and some basic information so that your enquiry can be followed up promptly by one of our Clinical Team.
If you call outside of daytime working hours (9am – 5.30pm) you can leave a message in confidence on the answer phone and it will be responded to on the following working day (Monday - Friday).
First Appointment
Your first appointment will be with one of our Counsellor/Therapists. S/he will tell you about the HSE National Counselling Service and what you can expect from counselling. You will have an opportunity to ask questions to help you decide if our service is the right one for you at this time.
The Counsellor will ask you for information about yourself and this will be held in confidence on our National Database. They will explain to you about confidentiality and consent and you will be invited to sign some forms which will be kept on file securely.
If you decide you want to proceed with counselling, you will be assigned to the waiting list and offered a counselling appointment as soon as one becomes available. This may not be with the counsellor you met for your first appointment at the National Counselling Service. Clients are allocated to counsellors as soon as they have a vacancy. Clients who have experienced abuse as a child in an institutional setting in Ireland are given service priority.
There is no charge for counselling provided by the HSE National Counselling Service.
At this time all requests for counselling must be made by calling our freephone, by letter or fax to the Director of Counselling in your area.It is not possible to arrange appointments online at this time.
